Raising a Shiba Inu can be incredibly rewarding—but it’s not for everyone. These little dogs are of personality, independence, and intelligence. They’re loyal companions when raised with care, consistency, and lots of patience.

1. Start with Early Socialization
Shibas can be naturally wary of strangers and other dogs. Introduce your puppy to a variety of people, places, and situations early on to build their confidence and prevent fear-based behaviors later.
- Take them on short car rides- Meet friendly dogs (in safe settings)- Expose them to new sounds, surfaces, and environments
2. Be Consistent with Training
Shibas are smart—but also strong-willed. They can learn quickly, but they don’t always care about impressing you. Use positive reinforcement (treats, praise, toys) and keep sessions short and fun.
- Focus on basic commands like sit, stay, come, and leash walking- Avoid harsh corrections—they may shut down or ignore you- Crate training is highly recommended for safety and structure
3. Set Boundaries Early
Shibas will test limits, especially as puppies. It’s important to establish household rules and stick to them:
- No jumping on furniture (unless allowed)- No rough play with hands- Be firm but fair—consistency is key
4. Keep Them Mentally & Physically Engaged
Shibas get bored easily, which can lead to mischief (like chewing, digging, or escaping). Keep their minds and bodies busy with:
- Daily walks and playtime- Puzzle toys or treat-dispensing games- Obedience or agility training for extra stimulation
5. Secure Your Space
Shibas are known escape artists. They’re fast, agile, and curious.
- Always use a leash or harness outside fenced areas- Make sure your yard is secure- Never trust a Shiba off-leash in an unfenced area unless extremely well-trained
6. Grooming & Care
Shibas are relatively low-maintenance:
- Brush once a week (more during shedding season)- Bathe only as needed- Keep nails trimmed and ears clean- Feed high-quality food and keep them at a healthy weight
7. Understand Their Unique Traits
- Shibas rarely bark, but they may “scream” when unhappy- They’re very clean and often house-train easily- They value independence—don’t expect constant cuddles- They’re extremely loyal and bond deeply with their humans
Final Thoughts
Shibas are not your average lap dog. They're proud, spirited, and often act more like a cat than a dog. But with the right training, socialization, and care, they become incredibly devoted companions full of character and charm.
